Goldsmiths’ student body consumes 443,500 Costa cups of coffee on campus annually and is responsible for approximately half of the coffee consumption within a 0.3 km radius. Our research investigates the main actors of the global network that is activated to bring takeaway coffee on campus. We follow the trace of the paper cup after consumption and explore the alternative routes. With this project, we seek to reveal and identify the layers of corporate structures and negotiations that underlie an object as quotidian as a humble coffee cup. Mapping the long line of global supply chain and waste management links invisible at the time and place of consumption of coffee we ask, what is the true cost?
