Sensible Cinema
19-20 January 2018

This two-day CHASE-funded advanced training workshop at Goldsmiths and Birkbeck brought key practitioners in film, video, and sound together with PhD students and staff to explore new research methods for creating moving-image works organised around an ecological sensibility; one that is attuned to both human and non-human modes of perception. The notion of “sensible cinema” around which the workshop and its training sessions were conceptualised might be characterised as advancing a geo-aesthetic approach to filmmaking; tapping into an expanded acoustic frequency range and exploring the limit conditions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Workshop sessions:
Ciné-Geographies
Electromagnetic Ethnographies
Geologic Film
Mediatised Natures

Workshop practitioners: Joshua Bonnetta (filmmaker, US)
Alison Blunt (commissioned project, musician, UK)
Philip Scheffner & Merle Kröger (filmmakers, Berlin)
Philippe Ciompi (sound designer, UK)

Screenings:
Havarie, dir. Scheffner & Merle Kröger, 2016
El Mar la Mar, dir. Joshua Bonnetta and JP Sniadecki, 2017

Organised by:
Susan Schuppli, Daniel Mann (Goldsmiths)
Joel McKim, Esther Leslie (Birkbeck)
